When are mtDNA haplogroups U (including K) and H first detected in North Africa?  

mtDNA haplogroups U (including K) and H are believed to have been present in North Africa since the Upper Paleolithic period. (from approximately 50,000 to 10,000 years ago).

- **Haplogroup H**: This haplogroup is thought to have originated in Europe around 20,000 to 25,000 years ago and later spread into North Africa, likely during the Late Glacial Maximum and subsequent periods of human migration.

- **Haplogroup U**: This haplogroup is older, with its origins traced back to around 30,000 to 40,000 years ago in the Near East or Europe. Subclades of U, including K, also spread into North Africa during the same time frame as H.

The presence of these haplogroups in North Africa is often associated with the movements of populations during the prehistoric periods.

 

While specific dates for the detection of mtDNA haplogroups H and U (including K) in North Africa during the Upper Paleolithic are not precisely established, genetic studies suggest that these haplogroups likely began to appear in the region around 20,000 to 30,000 years ago.  Ice Age. LGM
