 The year for Freemasons (in the standard Craft or "Blue Lodge" degrees) is calculated using a dating system called Anno Lucis (Latin for "In the Year of Light"), which is the current Gregorian year plus 4,000 years

 Therefore, for the calendar year 2026, the Masonic year is 6026 A.L. 

And that is WHEN they were founded.

Scottish Rite

  • Calendar name: Anno Mundi (A.M.) — "In the Year of the World"
  • How to calculate: Add 3,760 to the current year (or 3,761 depending on the month, as it aligns with the Hebrew calendar).

York Rite (Royal Arch Masons)

  • Calendar name: Anno Inventionis (A.I.) — "In the Year of the Discovery"
  • How to calculate: Add 530 to the current year (2026 + 530 = 2556).
  • Significance: It commemorates the year 530 BC, when Zerubbabel began building the Second Temple in Jerusalem
