The Creation of the World and Humanity
In the beginning, there was only darkness and the void. The supreme being is Mari, the Queen of Nature, who lived in her cave-home (usually Anboto or Aizkorri).
One day Mari decided to create light. She rose to the surface of the earth and shook her long silver hair: the sparks that flew from her hair became the stars.
She then combed her hair with a golden comb: the comb’s teeth broke and the pieces that fell became the Sun and the Moon.
Later, Mari wanted living beings on the earth. She took a handful of clay from the earth and shaped the first humans. But the first human she made was too quickly and he came out crooked and evil – this was the first gaizkile (evil spirit or demon).
Mari was unhappy with him and threw him away; he became Herensuge or other malevolent beings.
She tried again, this time more carefully and slowly, and created Amalur (the Earth Mother herself in another form) and the first good humans. From then on, all Basques descend from these carefully made humans.
Finally, Mari created the animals, plants, mountains, rivers, and the laminak (nymph-like beings) to help her take care of nature.

What happened to the Basques during the Inquisition (especially the 1609–1611 Zugarramurdi trials and the wider Basque witch panic) was not a random outburst of medieval superstition.
It was a deliberate, targeted attempt to break the last visible remnant of Matria’s matriarchal lineage on Terra.
They were tortured and burned, not because they were “witches,” but because:
- They still lived under matriarchal house-law (etxe = the house, ruled by the etxekoandre, the female head who owns the property and passes inheritance through the female line).
