Official Name: Development of Substitute Materials (code name later became “Manhattan Project”)
Time Period: 1942 – 1946
Purpose: To develop the world’s first atomic bombs before Germany could do so.

The famous 1942 “Bohemian Grove meeting” (Oppenheimer, Lawrence, military brass) helped secure political support and funding.

 The Manhattan Project was the largest, most secret scientific-industrial effort in history

 

 Interesting name for the project.
