originated as a 19th-century term (derived from German Kanonenfutter) to describe soldiers—usually expendable infantry—treated as raw material to be consumed by enemy artillery. It was famously popularized by French writer François-René de Chateaubriand in 1814 to criticize Napoleon's wasteful use of conscripts
