That is a 6 pointed cross presented as 6 pointed ''star''  - the ''Star of Life''. ''DEATH''. 

The rod = Cancer 7. And yes, it is permanently associated with cancer.  See the  Dendera zodiac, where the symbol appears. 

''Asclepius'' is from ''Care'' > ''Cre' > ''cle''' + ''pat/ptah''. ''Asclepius'' = CRE PAT  = Peter. = Cancer 7 (Sirius minus 7 degrees).

The snake =the  symbol of death, evil (not life, etc). POISON.
