Coptic Anno Martyrum, Diocletian and Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore

 Coptic years are counted from 284 CE, the year Diocletian became Roman Emperor, whose reign was marked by torture and mass executions, especially in Egypt. Hence, the Coptic year is identified by the abbreviation A.M. (for Anno Martyrum or "in the Year of the Martyrs").
