Empress Maria Theresa of Austria

 Empress Maria Theresa of Austria -  Maria Theresia Walburga Amalia Christina -- May 13, 1717, to November 29, 1780, 

The most famous and enduring nickname her people gave her was "Die Landesmutter" (which translates to "The Mother of the Nation" or "The Mother of the Country"). Her name really means this, too. 

The Austrian people also affectionately referred to her simply as "Frau Kaiser" (Mrs. Emperor) or "The Great Empress."

While her husband Francis Stephen was seen as an aloof foreign businessman, Maria Theresa was viewed as the fierce, protective matriarch who fought wars to keep Austria safe.

Francis I,  also known as Francis Stephen of Lorraine, the husband of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, was a zealous and high-profile Freemason. 

Initiation (1731): Francis Stephen was initiated into Freemasonry at a special lodge in The Hague, Netherlands. The ceremony was conducted by Dr. John Theophilus Desaguliers, a crucial figure in early modern Freemasonry, with the prominent British diplomat Lord Chesterfield present

Austrian Foundations (1742): After marrying Maria Theresa, he assisted in founding Austria's very first Masonic lodge, Zu den drei Kanonen (The Three Cannons), in Vienna.

The Back-Staircase Escape (1743): In a famous historical incident, Maria Theresa ordered 100 of her grenadiers to raid a Viennese lodge meeting. Francis Stephen, who was in attendance, only managed to escape arrest by slipping down a hidden back staircase. He subsequently used his imperial authority to safely release the 12 masonry brothers who had been captured

He was not allowed to rule and she nearly had him arrested for treason. His secret Masonic activities crossed the line into what she viewed as state treason.

 Ultimately, her intense personal affection for Francis Stephen is the only reason he was never publicly prosecuted or formally charged with treason. Instead of arresting him, she chose to politically isolate him, humiliate his secret society, and keep him on a remarkably tight leash for the rest of his life.

 

  • 1717: Born in Vienna to Holy Roman German Emperor Karl VI. (Ca Ra = Cancer)
  • 1736: Married Francis Stephen of Lorraine at age 18.
  • 1740: Inherited the throne at age 23, sparking the War of the Austrian Succession.
  • 1745: Successfully navigated the war and got her husband elected as Holy Roman Emperor.
  • 1765: Francis Stephen died suddenly. For her remaining 15 years, she wore only black in mourning and ruled jointly with her eldest son, Joseph II.
