The Cremation of Care ritual at Bohemian Grove

 The Cremation of Care

The Cremation of Care ritual at Bohemian Grove is not held on June 24. While the term "Midsummer" is used, the club's main event typically takes place during the last two weeks of July.

Sun (7 to 13 July): 15° to 21° Cancer

CRE + Mat = first degree of Mat = Orion's Bellatrix. But in this case, ''Cremation'' = burning.  Mat = the owl symbol in Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Care = the energy of Re = Cancer/Apis Bull/Ptah.

The Schedule: The entire encampment lasts for roughly two weeks, with the Cremation of Care traditionally held as the opening night ceremony.

Opening Night: In many years, this has fallen on the first Saturday of the July retreat. For example, records from various years show the ritual occurring on dates like July 7, July 12, or July 13.

The 40-foot (12.192 meters concrete owl shrine serves as the backdrop for this ritual. For the club, the owl represents wisdom and the ability to see through the darkness. During the ceremony, the robed members burn the effigy of "Dull Care" at the base of this shrine to symbolically shed their professional burdens before the retreat begins

The club maintains it is simply a symbol of the Goddess Atena’s owl of wisdom.

Note:  Atena is the correct spelling of the name.

The Cremation of Care ritual for 2025 was held on Saturday, July 12

 The ritual traditionally takes place on the first Saturday night of the main summer encampment, which in 2025 was scheduled from Monday, July 7, to Friday, August 1

 Location: The priv ate 2,700-acre redwood forest in Monte Rio, California.

The plays are often based on themes of mythology, history, or folklore. In keeping with the club's 150-year history, all roles in these 2025 productions—including female characters—were performed by male members
