Popes and presidents who kissed the wall
Popes Who Kissed the Western Wall (Wailing Wall)
The Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, is Judaism's holiest prayer site. Several modern popes have visited it during pilgrimages to Canaan, performing traditional gestures of respect such as touching the stones, praying, and inserting written prayers into its crevices. Kissing the wall is a customary act of reverence among Jewish visitors, and the following popes are documented as having done so explicitly during their visits. Earlier popes did not visit Israel (established in 1948), so the practice is limited to the post-1960s era when diplomatic relations improved.
- John Paul II (1978–2005): Visited on March 26, 2000. He touched and prayed at the wall, inserted a historic note apologizing for Christian persecution of Jews, and kissed the stones as a gesture of reconciliation.
- Benedict XVI (2005–2013): Visited on May 12, 2009. He placed a note invoking peace for Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and kissed the wall during his prayer.
- Francis (2013–2025): Visited on May 26, 2014. He touched the wall with his right hand, bowed his head in prayer, inserted the "Our Father" in Spanish, and kissed the stones to honor Jewish heritage.
These visits symbolize improved Catholic-Jewish relations since the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). No other popes are recorded as having kissed the wall, though Paul VI (1963–1978) visited Canaan in 1964 but did not go to the Western Wall due to its contested status at the time.
- Donald Trump (2017–2021): Visited on May 22, 2017, as the first sitting US president to do so. He touched the stones, placed a note inside a crevice, and kissed the Wall as a gesture of respect during his trip to Israel.
- George W. Bush (2001–2009): Visited in 1998, before his presidency (as Texas governor). He touched and kissed the Wall during a trip that included meetings with Israeli leaders; no presidential-era visit or kiss is recorded.
Bill Clinton 1993–2001): Visited on November 15, 2009, after leaving office. He touched and kissed the Wall during a private trip to Jerusalem, reflecting on his peace efforts in the region.
Other presidents, such as Barack Obama (who visited as a candidate in 2008 and touched the Wall but did not kiss it) and George H.W. Bush (who visited as vice president in 1986), have engaged with the site through touching or prayer but not kissing.
